Snippets, twenty-seven

Here are some short pieces based on things that have happened in my life recently.

Dream Drinking

I had another dream about my dad last night. Somehow, he had made a miraculous recovery from his dementia and was living in his own apartment again. But, while his mind was more healed, he still had cirrhosis. He had gone to pick up dinner for him, my brother, and me. As he was taking the take out out of the bag and putting it on the table, I looked at the discarded paper bag. It had a receipt attached to it. There was one for the food and then another stapled to the back of the bag.

It was for a bottle of wine.

I asked him if he was still drinking, and he tried to deflect the question. But, ultimately, he confessed. I confronted him about having cirrhosis and how the drinking could ultimately kill him. And didn't he remember being in a care facility? That could happen again!

He kind of stared blankly at me.

And I woke up.

Free Boxed Lunch

Today, I got a free boxed lunch. I feel a bit like a student again, swarming the free food even though I COULD just eat something else. But, hey, if sometimes my job gives me free food, I should take advantage of that, yes?

It wasn't anything special, a sandwich and some chips (that were jalapeño-flavored, so I didn't eat them), but I was still delighted to have free lunch. Oh, and there was dessert of an oatmeal raisin cookie and a small mint (which I had never seen in a boxed lunch before). I haven't had an oatmeal raisin cookie in a long time and, for some reason, it reminds me of my dad. I can't think of a specific example associated with him, but I'm sure we baked them at some point.

I'm relatively new in my job so I'm not sure how often I will get free lunch, but it was a nice surprise.

Palm Reading

So, I'm learning how to palm read for my nephew's birthday party. The online course I have been doing has been quite overwhelming in the amount of information, so I will just focus on the main palm lines I think.

One reason I've found the course overwhelming is that my palm seems to be somewhat unusual. This means, when I look down at my own hand to try and locate what the lecturer is talking about, I can't always find it. Sometimes, this is normal as the lecturer notes that the line or whorl or what have you is rare, but sometimes it's a more obvious (or should be obvious) feature that I just can't find.

I'd be curious to go to a more experienced palm reader and see what I can learn, but, for now, I'll just have to wonder.

Podcast Catch-up

Why have I gotten so behind on all of my favorite podcasts? I used to listen to several regularly, and now it's just two. I think I've been listening to more audiobooks, but that can't be the only reason.

But!

I am catching up!

I recently caught up on the regular episodes of My Favorite Murder and, as I type, I'm catching up on Sawbones. So many fascinating stories! True, many horrifying, but still, I think I'm enriched to learn of them.

I'm glad though. Sometimes, an seemingly endless backlog is comforting to me, because a thing I love just won't end. At other times, it feels daunting because how could I ever catch up?

What have you been listening to lately? What have you been meaning to listen to lately?

It's not too late to play catch-up.

Temperature Changes

The temperature is really starting to feel like fall. Late evenings and early mornings are in the 30s with afternoons in the 50s or 60s. Blankets become welcoming as opposed to an anxious habit. Warm drinks in the morning revive us instead of scalding us.

The leaves are also changing color, adding a vibrancy and dimension to the trees and thus our world.

I welcome these seasonal changes, even knowing that soon the darkness will overtake the light and the cold will rush through me.

15 facts I learned from a random Wikipedia article

Original prompt: click on "Random Wikipedia Article" and write about whatever comes up (you can try 3 times and pick your favorite). For the record, I got Alejandro Estivill , Fencing at the 2011 Pan American Games – Women's épée , and Benjamin F. Jonas . I chose Benjamin F. Jonas because it was the longest of the three entries and it had a photo. He was born in Kentucky, moved to Illinois as a kid, and went to college and spent the rest of his life in Louisiana Jonas's father was a merchant and lawyer His father knew Lincoln (like they were real buds) Despite this, Jonas sided with the confederacy Not only did he side with the confederacy, but he joined the Confederate army and rose to the rank of major He went to University of Louisiana (now Tulane) Jonas was Jewish (I didn't know there were Jewish senators who served the Confederacy) He was the second Jewish U.S. Senator from Louisiana and the third Jewish Senator overall Jonas was the first Ashkenazi Jewish US...

Origin story or first issue of a superhero whose super power is geometry

Arya sat in history class and was bored. She longed to get to geometry, where things made more sense. She liked geometry so much that she had joined the math team to be able to do it more. Okay, there was also the extra time with her friends who loved math as much as she did, but some of the appeal was just the math itself. Finally the bell rang and Arya had four minutes to get to her geometry class. She passed right by the chemistry class next door where her least favorite teacher was conducting experiments. He needed to be more careful, thought Arya. The teacher had once exploded a glass beaker and not on purpose. Arya took her seat and excitedly pulled out her notebook. It was her favorite color: hot pink. She assigned her notebook and folder colors in ways that felt right to her. And since geometry was her favorite subject, she made her notebook and folder for it her favorite color. As the teacher started to go over the most common mistakes from the last quiz, Arya could've swo...

Color palette

Original prompt: "Google "color palette," pick one, and write something inspired by it." I actually Googled "color palette public domain" to be sure I could use it and found the image on this post. I used the "floral" section for my inspiraiton. The soft sunlight somehow didn't dim the shine of the fireflies. Such it was in the fae realm. Fern loved this time of day in the faewild where it wasn't quite day, but it was far from night. Fern frolicked alone in the glade as she was want to do. It didn't matter to her that her laughter carried itself alone on the breeze; she was content. She wasn't sure how long she'd been alone as she watched the suns begin to set, but it was pleasant in its own way. But then, she heard a noise. It wasn't the noise of leaves on the wind or twigs snapping from some comforting creature. It was the noise of someone approaching with grim determination. Fern wasn't sure how to ready herself to ...
