No, I don't think I will ever run a spa, but here are things that I think could be cool for one (that likely are offered by some spas).
- Allow folks to pick their soundtrack if they're in a private room (we would have playlists for them to choose from as well as allow them to submit a playlist/audiobook/podcast of their own ahead of time to be sure whoever is providing them services is okay with that playlist's/audiobook's/podcast's content and tone)
- Provide an option for folks to meet with the employees who will be providing them service beforehand so folks can be comfortable and learn more about the process
- Give folks a survey to fill out before their services to find out if folks have any known "hot spots" (meaning areas they do not want touched) or other things they dislike/want to steer clear of if possible/need to avoid (these could be allergies, or they could be things like "Oh, I want to be sure my hair doesn't get wet because of x, y, and z," or anything that may be an upsetting trigger for them)
- The survey could also be used for things folks like (e.g. what scent of massage oil they'd prefer, facial products they know work well for them, or even if they just like to talk during services)
- Have size-inclusive robes, towels, etc.
- Additionally, splurge so that those robes, towels, etc. are especially comfortable
- Train staff how to check in with folks getting services (e.g. asking folks before services start if they want steps etc. explained to them before they happen, allowing folks chances to say if they're comfortable or not, or being able to adjust when someone says something isn't working for them)
- Establish firm protocols for if someone is being inappropriate with staff (unfortunately, I'm sure this happens all too often, so I'd want to be sure my staff feel comfortable reporting what has happened and ousting the guest at the very least or pursuing charges if that is what the staff member wants)
- Purchase size-inclusive massage/other treatment tables
- Also, get massage/other treatment tables that can have their heights adjusted
- Give folks a chance to shower before and/or after treatments as long as they schedule that ahead of time (the scheduling ahead of time is just to be sure the showers don't throw off the entire schedule for the day/employees)
- Perhaps hire a therapist that can folks can schedule with as well
- Sell a range of products from the facial creams the facialists use to the robes we provide to massage tools
- Host grief circles or other similar support groups
- Ask the staff what the best way for them to be paid tips is
