"Vikki, come here a second, would you?"
Vikki, who had just turned off the TV and was planning on calling it an early night, somewhat begrudgingly headed into the kitchen. "Yeah, Mom. What's up?"
"I have something I want to give you." Vikki's mom, who was also named Victoria as it was a family name, placed a small metal box on their wooden kitchen table. "It has a bit of a story, so would you sit?"
Vikki wanted to go to bed, but figured it would be rude at this point, so she sat down across from her mom and waited for her to start. When Vikki's mom stayed silent, Vikki observed her for a moment. Vikki had always been told she looked just like her mom. They had the same dark brown eyes that everyone called lovely, they had the same somewhat curly hair that liked to defy any attempt to be made orderly, their noses were both thought of as being a good size, and their lips curled into the same smile when they were happy. But now, Vikki's mom was not smiling, her lips were pulled taught. "Is everything okay, Mom?"
"Yes, it's just...it's time for me to pass this on to you. You're a grown woman now."
Vikki wondered if this had anything to do with the fact that she was done with college, but still hadn't moved out. Sure, it's what most of her friends were doing, but maybe this was going to be some sort of hint that it was time for her to move on. "Okay..."
Vikki's mom pushed the small metal box towards her. "Open it."
Silently, Vikki took the box and opened the lid. The smallest creak came out of the hinges, but Vikki tried not to flinch at the sound since this present seemed so important to her mother. Inside was a pristine string of pearls. The same string of pearls that her mom always wore. Vikki wondered how she could've missed that her mother had taken them off. Unsure of what the gesture meant, Vikki delicately took the pearls out. "Oh, Mom, but these--"
"Were your grandmother's, yes," Vikki's mom answered before Vikki could finish. "She passed them onto me when I was about your age and her mother gave them to her and so on."
"Mom, this is really nice, but you don't have to give me these. I know they mean a lot to you."
Vikki's mom seemed to freeze for a moment, almost like a glitch, but then continued, "They mean a lot to the line of Victoria's in our family."
"Family name comes with family pearls?"
Vikki's mom considered for a moment before saying, "Pearls and other things."
"Other things?"
"Have you ever wondered why we look so alike?"
A small chill ran through Vikki, but she tried to ignore it. "Because you're my mom?"
A small smile played across Vikki's mom's lips, "Well, yes dear, but it's more than that. Have a look at this photo."
Vikki looked at the black and white photo that her mom handed her and stared at it in a bit of disbelief. If it hadn't been for the context clues, Vikki would've sworn it was a photo of herself. "Who is this?"
"That's your great great grandmother Victoria."
"We look exactly alike."
"Yes."
A silence fell between them as Vikki waited for more. When it wasn't offered, Vikki asked, "What are you telling me, Mom?"
Her mother sighed heavily, "You may find this hard to believe and I won't blame you, because I didn't believe it at first either, but the line of Victorias in our family all carry a special power that is tied to that necklace."
"What are you talking about?"
"Haven't you ever noticed how good you and I are at predicting the weather or the winners of a game or the end of a movie?"
Vikki shrugged. "I guess, but that's not so strange."
"Well there are other things you'll learn to predict with this necklace. Including which man is best to marry so that you can have another Victoria."
Wondering if her mother was going insane, Vikki asked, "Mom...are you saying I'm psychic?"
"I'm saying, dear Vikki, that all the Victorias in our family have been psychics. That our power passes through the generations and ties us all together, making us almost one, which is why we look the same. The necklace will help bring out your power."
Vikki slowly put the necklace on.
