Just some things I've learned along the way.
- Buy a skinny padlock. I had one padlock for my hostel stays, but it was too big for the lock. I bought another one and learned my lesson.
- Look up a few key phrases in the nation's language. This includes, of course, "Can I pet your dog?"
- Have an adaptable adapter. I'm so glad that I have one that works for both UK and Europe sockets.
- Bring layers. Weather reports always lie anyways.
- Have at least a day to wander. You never know what you'll find!
- Remember to treat yourself. You're on vacation, enjoy it.
- Learn a bit of the history. You can do this through a museum or a walking tour or a bus tour or just talking to people.
- Take all the photos. And make no apologies about this.
- Get some kind of souvenir. I like to buy bracelets and magnets everywhere I go, but maybe you're more of a postcard or decorative spoon kind of person. I just think it's nice to have something to remember your trip by.
- Have some down time. If you just wear yourself out, you won't have any fun.
- Look up if you tip. You don't want to be the rude one who doesn't tip when they're supposed to.
- Get some local food. You can often find things you're very familiar with, but it's good to try new things.
- Take location as a major factor in deciding where to stay. This includes what sites are nearby as well as how easy it will be to get to your transportation.
- Get a map of the city. Phones are great, but they can fail. Also, local maps tend to have some good tips that your phone won't have.
- See some nature. It's good to see a city, but also to see the nature in and around it
