Look through your passport and come up with a new story for how you got all of your stamps

Time to make up some adventures I never had.

  1. Zurich: Clearly I came here on the hunt for the best chocolate. It remained elusive though and I will have to go back many more times and eat a lot more chocolate.
  2. Cork: I thought here I would find where corks come from, but it turns out that the city and the bottle stopper are unrelated. Even though this was a disappointment, I decided to stay for a while to investigate and be sure of this disconnection.
  3. Amsterdam: That one song we sang at JCC never truly left my head. It possessed me in a way I cannot explain and thus I was compelled to "go down to AmsterDAM. Amster, amster, dam, dam, dam." My stay seems to have quieted the haunting song...for now.
  4. Dublin: I needed a fairy's blessing really badly. I was desperate. There were trolls bothering me at every turn for tolls and I knew a fairy would be the only way to free myself. I managed to escape the trolls long enough to get on a plane and fly to the land of the fairies. But the wee folk proved hard to find as, after all, they are wee. But I finally met one who told me that the really powerful, and frightening, fairies were in Iceland.
  5. ReykjavĂk: I heeded the Irish fairy's advice and flew to Iceland to find the hidden folk. Unsurprisingly, invisible creatures are hard to find. But I managed to find one who was trying to steal something from a very particular museum that had a piece of a hidden person on display. After assisting in their theft, they gave me a magic coin to give to the trolls. When I was back home and gave it to the troll, his eyes went wide and he fled screaming. I guess it worked out well.
  6. Galway: The Irish fairy told me that she spent most of her time in Galway and so I wanted to go back and thank her, but I didn't find her again. I did make some great swan friends though.
  7. Barcelona: I heard there was a mystical dragon in this land. Yes, I knew it wasn't one of the places that was labeled "Here be Dragons" on old maps, but old maps are, well, old and often inaccurate. I had heard tale that an artist had accidentally created a real dragon for he did not know his mosaic materials belonged to an ancient vessel used to bring the dead back to life and his mortar and glue materials used ground up dragon eggs. The dragon lived in a cage the size of a park and tickets were sold to see it. I went and met the mystical beast, but found it much more lizard-like than dragon like. I guess that's why it didn't fly to its freedom.
  8. Manchester: I kept being told I should check out this soccer/football thing and I knew Manchester was the name of a team. I figured, if I really wanted to try and get into the sportsball, I should go to its source. Turns out, soccer/football teams, like all teams, travel and I missed seeing a game live. I did watch one in a pub though and, I gotta tell ya, I still don't get it. But hey, at least I tried.
  9. US: It was good to return home. I had had many adventures gallivanting around the world, but sometimes there is no place like home...but I do hope to add more stamps to my passport soon.
Which was your favorite of my made up stories?

15 facts about my dad

Just been thinking about some lighthearted facts I know about my dad lately. When he was young, he had a goldfish named Lysander He introduced me to Star Trek At Christmas, he would tear up at It's a Wonderful Life He used to send me articles from his Yahoo email account that he thought I'd like We used to play a game called "Nightmare" where he would lie down and we'd jump around (and sometimes on) him He would clip possible recipes for us to try out of newspapers and magazines We bought him a Paddington Bear to take on trips because we feared he'd be lonely and he always took it He had teddy bears for three different holidays We once had such a hilariously difficult time building a gingerbread house that when some frosting ended up on the counter, I plopped a gumdrop on it and we laughed until we cried He and his sister were born about 11 months apart We would try recipes from Top Chef He kept gifts I made him, even when they weren't great At Christmas, ...

15 things you'll think about during your dad's latest hospital stay

This is meant to be a related piece to "15 things to do in your dad's hospital room," "15 Things You Find in Your Dad's Hospice Room," and "15 Things You Find When You Clean Out Your Dad’s Apartment" .  The Christmas lights at the nurse's station that should really have been switched for saccharine cupids by now What team decided to hang up a clearly labeled DRAFT safety sign Who comes up with the aliases they seem to use for trauma patients and how they decided on Redstone for your dad That his skin either looks like a bruised elephant or like sickeningly conflicting colors of thin paper mache Where you can possibly get food--you're shaky The patient in the ER somewhere with a lot of ammo, but no gun, or so they say Why the staff is being so happily loud and swearing...it feels discordant The used bandaid and gauze that are left on the floor of his ER room as he moves to his hospital room...the last proof he was there Having to do this a...
