15 things I've learned while babysitting

Okay so I'm super naive about babies which is why I babysat with my mom, but here are some things I've learned today.
  1. Babies are heavier than I thought. Yes, I realize plenty of people know this already but ho boy, we just put him down for his first nap and my arms are feeling it.
  2. Textured baby books are the best kind. My nephew has one called Never Touch a Dragon and it's awesome. My nephew loved touching all of the the different textures and I liked the cool pictures.
  3. Babies eat more than I thought. When my mom handed me my nephew's breakfast, I asked if he would really eat that much and sure enough he did. It just looked like so much and he's so little!
  4. I need to narrate books more as I read to babies. I thought I should just read the story, but my mom said it's better to point out things on the page and make the noises of the animals.
  5. Cool playgrounds have t-rexes. The one we went to had one and I was delighted.
  6. Sometimes poops interrupt mealtime. At first I thought he just didn't want to eat, but no...it was poop.
  7. Some babies are far less cranky about diaper changes when the diapers are poopy. He hated when we changed his wet diapers, but was pretty happy when we changed his poopy diapers.
  8. I do not remember nearly as many kids' songs as I thought I did. I tried to think of songs to sing him and had to ask for help from my mom.
  9. Babies need so many more clothes in one day than I thought. He is currently on outfit number four and (I think) bib three. Now, to be fair, some of this is because I'm still learning to feed a baby, but still.
  10. Blowing raspberries can be incredibly cute. I used to think they were for just teasing people.
  11. Babies can clap their feet together. I guess this shouldn't have been a surprise, but it's so insanely cute.
  12. My mom calls me getting baby poop on my hand for the first time "getting baptized."
  13. There are pacifier-type-things that go in the freezer for teething. It's so smart! And much beloved.
  14. Diaper bags with zippers at the bottom so you can get at the stuff at the bottom are GENIUS.
  15. My mom has a much better ear for when babies wake up from their naps than I do. Maybe I'll learn this though?

15 facts about my dad

Just been thinking about some lighthearted facts I know about my dad lately. When he was young, he had a goldfish named Lysander He introduced me to Star Trek At Christmas, he would tear up at It's a Wonderful Life He used to send me articles from his Yahoo email account that he thought I'd like We used to play a game called "Nightmare" where he would lie down and we'd jump around (and sometimes on) him He would clip possible recipes for us to try out of newspapers and magazines We bought him a Paddington Bear to take on trips because we feared he'd be lonely and he always took it He had teddy bears for three different holidays We once had such a hilariously difficult time building a gingerbread house that when some frosting ended up on the counter, I plopped a gumdrop on it and we laughed until we cried He and his sister were born about 11 months apart We would try recipes from Top Chef He kept gifts I made him, even when they weren't great At Christmas, ...
