I've done some of these, but not all, for my book review blog. Many of these ideas came from this Reedsy article.
- If you're a prime member, you can get a free digital ARC (advanced reader copy) every month
- Go to your local indie bookstore and explain you're getting into the book reviewing business and ask if you can check out their spare advanced copies (be sure you have a website to show). Furthermore, see if they ever solicit customer reviews of books to display (I haven't done this so no idea if it'll work, but I think it's worth a try)
- Make an Edelweiss account (you can download some copies there and request others)
- Sign up for Hidden Gems Books (you'll get emails about available ARCs)
- Have a favorite indie author? It's worth a try writing fan mail and explaining you'd like to review their upcoming work (maybe include a positive review for their previous work along with this) (I haven't done this so no idea if it'll work, but I think it's worth a try)
- Is there a small local publisher? Try a similar tactic to the indie bookstore. Write an email explaining that you're an upcoming reviewer and would like to be considered for digital ARCs (I haven't done this so no idea if it'll work, but I think it's worth a try)
- LibraryThing Early Reviewers advertises ARCs and you can apply for them
- Subscribe to Shelf Awareness they sometimes advertise available ARCs
- Write to your local library and see if they can help you out (I haven't done this so no idea if it'll work, but I think it's worth a try)
- Apply to be a tour host for Rockstar Book Tours
- Become a tour host for TLC Book Tours
- Create a NetGalley account (works like Edelweiss)
- Scope out your free libraries as people will abandon unwanted ARCs there sometimes (and, if not, hey at least every book in there is one you can review for free)
- Apply for book reviewer jobs (you likely won't get as much of a choice in what you read, but, hey, you'll get paid)
- Know a local publication that does book reviews? Write to them and see if they need another reviewer. And, if they don't do reviews, offer to start a column (I haven't done this so no idea if it'll work, but I think it's worth a try)
