Snippets, thirteen

Here are some short pieces based on things that have happened in my life recently.

Roots

I set up a little propagation station in my dining room. It is scattered with jars and bottles of past delectables, filled to the brim with water, and at least one plant plopped in. I take a peak every now and then and pluck the plants from the glasses to check on the roots. The spider plant roots are spindly and white, but growing strong. The inch plant roots I can't quite find, but new vines are growing so I must be doing something right. There is something very satisfying about propagating my plants. I don't use these plants for food, just for comfort. I love the color they add to my life and I love knowing that I'll spread that color to other people by giving away these little new independent plants.

Rum

I have a mostly full bottle of rum in my freezer. I keep it in my freezer for two reasons. One is that I like my drinks cold most often. The other is out of sight, out of mind. I do worry, from time to time, that alcohol will call to me too much. Whenever I have a glass of wine by myself, I worry that it could be too much. That having that glass of wine by myself might be the start of a dangerous pattern. Doesn't every dangerous pattern start with just one? Now it's only mostly full because I have had some, not a lot, but some. But for now, I'll keep it in the freezer so that some does not become all, alone.

Schlünder

Schlünder is a brand of sweet confections that I only find at a local Christmas market once a year. I'm sure I could try and find them online, but that destroys some of the magic of finding them at the market. My favorite is the amaretto cake--one I'm determined to figure out how to make (with the assistance of a friend who is a former professional baker). This year, I found a cappuccino one that I'm delighted to try as soon as I finish writing this. Perhaps it will become my new favorite, who knows? I spend too much money on sweets at this Christmas market, but they are special so I justify it to myself. The other sweets I enjoy are gummy frogs and gummy pigs. The pigs have a texture I very much enjoy and haven't found elsewhere. Once year is acceptable to splurge on sweets, right?

Shelves

I bought more shelves recently. My time of keeping books and other items at my parents' is coming to an end so I know I needed more storage. I got the same as my other two small shelves and I hope it's enough. I don't relish the thought of rearranging all of my books and the knickknacks that adorn them. I also have two sets of golden alligator bookends that are now sold out everywhere and I won't be able to replicate. I'm a big fan of symmetry so this is a bit of a bummer for me. I hope I won't be irked.

Tree Ornaments

My tree is lit with D&D dice lights. Unconventional, perhaps, but very me. I look over at my tree and realize most of my ornaments are either gifts and/or from a local Christmas market. I have some that predate me even getting a tree, but I had held onto them knowing that one day, I would start getting my own tree. Others are personalized. I have one for each of my dogs, one gone too soon, but always in my heart. One of my dearest ornaments is from a friend and features a lovely quote and two meaningful photos. there is one I don't quite remember where it's from and I feel guilty for that, but I'm sure one day I will remember again.

15 facts about my dad

Just been thinking about some lighthearted facts I know about my dad lately. When he was young, he had a goldfish named Lysander He introduced me to Star Trek At Christmas, he would tear up at It's a Wonderful Life He used to send me articles from his Yahoo email account that he thought I'd like We used to play a game called "Nightmare" where he would lie down and we'd jump around (and sometimes on) him He would clip possible recipes for us to try out of newspapers and magazines We bought him a Paddington Bear to take on trips because we feared he'd be lonely and he always took it He had teddy bears for three different holidays We once had such a hilariously difficult time building a gingerbread house that when some frosting ended up on the counter, I plopped a gumdrop on it and we laughed until we cried He and his sister were born about 11 months apart We would try recipes from Top Chef He kept gifts I made him, even when they weren't great At Christmas, ...
