My favorite season

Whenever I'm asked what my favorite season is, I default to saying spring.

There are a bunch of reasons why I love spring. The weather is starting to get warmer again, flowers sprout and bloom, and my birthday happens (my birthday is still in winter, but it's close enough that I like to think of myself as a spring baby).

When the sun starts to come out more and not be accompanied by freezing temperatures, it makes me smile. I feel brighter on bright days, as I think many do. I love the feeling of a warm sunbeam on my face that doesn't feel scorching (though I should still wear sunscreen on any sunny day). This is especially true as I have a lot of windows both at work and at home. I love looking out and being bathed in sunlight.

It makes me smile to see little flowers start to peak through the cold earth. It shows that things renew, change, and grow. I like looking for new buds on my walks and a smile creeps onto my face when I see a little sprout poking its way through. I do like to stop and smell flowers, but more commonly, I like to stop and photograph them. I just find them beautiful. Again, I don't think I'm unique for this, but it is just a lovely thing I enjoy.

A part of the blooming experience that I enjoy that is slightly less common, is the joy of green. Yes, the colorful petals of tulips do delight me (they're my favorite flower to look at--lilac is my favorite to smell), but I also just love seeing the world turn green again. Some of this is because it symbolizes the aforementioned warmer weather, however, there are other aspects I enjoy. One is that it is just a change in the aesthetic of the world. Winter can be a striking aesthetic with the contrast of starkly empty branches and sparkling white snow, but green literally symbolizes the breath of life returning. It should also be noted that green is my favorite color, but whether that's why I love spring or spring is the reason I love green is difficult to unravel (of course there's also the whole alligator aspect of it as well).

I always look forward to my birthday (well, almost always). Now that I'm in my 30s, there is some trepidation with entering a new year and not feeling any closer to many of my goals. However, I usually keep those feelings at bay by throwing a fun party (murder mystery party this year). I also genuinely enjoy getting gifts. To me, they're a physical representation of someone thinking about me. So gifts don't need to be a huge thing for me to be touched. A simple card can make me smile and I'll treasure it. Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate elaborate gifts too (like the time my friends pooled their money to help pay for my plane tickets home from my yearish abroad in Galway). This isn't meant to be a "please give me gifts" post though. Honestly, my favorite thing people can give me is some way of making my life easier (this can be making me dinner, assisting me with packing or moving, or like the time recently a friend helped me take out a lot of trash I'd embarrassingly let pile up). Not that you have to do those things either! For my birthday, just do something to let me know you're thinking of me (a short text works wonders for my mood sometimes).

Now, I do have some level of appreciation for every season. Summer brings beach days, the joy of iced drinks and ice cream on hot days, and an influx of festivals. Fall has gorgeous colors, a color palette that I think looks great on me, and often mild temperatures. Winter allows me to hunker down and get cozy, brings the holiday I'm named for, and lots of family and friend traditions.

Yet, spring is the one that (usually) is dearest to my heart.

So what is your favorite season and why? I'd love to know.

Starting my parental journey, part 9

I've officially begun my second cycle. On Wednesday, I had a virtual appointment, yesterday I had my baseline ultrasound, and today I began injections again. On Wednesday, I expressed my concern about my weight and was told not to fret about it for this cycle but that I should work on it for my health. I got told some vague things about measuring my food by volume and weight and that being the key the weight loss (idk it sounded weird to me). But other than that my appointment went well and I really liked the PA I met with. Overall, she was supportive and encouraging me to advocate for myself. Yesterday, I had to get up earlier than normal (6am) so I could make it to my ultrasound at 7am (I have asked for future ultrasounds to be at 8am). I got weighed (ugh), had my blood drawn, and t...

15 facts about my dad

Just been thinking about some lighthearted facts I know about my dad lately. When he was young, he had a goldfish named Lysander He introduced me to Star Trek At Christmas, he would tear up at It's a Wonderful Life He used to send me articles from his Yahoo email account that he thought I'd like We used to play a game called "Nightmare" where he would lie down and we'd jump around (and sometimes on) him He would clip possible recipes for us to try out of newspapers and magazines We bought him a Paddington Bear to take on trips because we feared he'd be lonely and he always took it He had teddy bears for three different holidays We once had such a hilariously difficult time building a gingerbread house that when some frosting ended up on the counter, I plopped a gumdrop on it and we laughed until we cried He and his sister were born about 11 months apart We would try recipes from Top Chef He kept gifts I made him, even when they weren't great At Christmas, ...
