What's the one thing you'd never do and why?

I am terrified of heights. I can get a little nervous even watching videos that involve extreme heights. I can get nervous on a ladder (even if I'm not at the top). I get nervous about deep water because, to me, it's the same thing as heights (an abyss below). 

So, it should come as no surprise that I would never go skydiving.

I have said before that to get me on a roller coaster, you'd have to have a gun to my head. But I've said to get me to go skydiving, you'd have to have a gun to a loved one's head. Like if it was just my life, bye. That's how scared I am of skydiving.

How do people do it?

Yeah, yeah, yeah it's a rush! I don't get rushes for things people often say you should get rushes for (e.g. working out), so I don't think this would translate to me. Honestly, I'd probably just pass out (which seems like a very bad thing to happen if you're FALLING FROM AN AIRPLANE).

Now, I'm not saying that people who want to go skydiving shouldn't be able to do so, I'm just saying that you could never get me to do it. 

I've seen videos of people going skydiving and, even though I know they'll end well, I feel anxious. WHY ARE THEY DOING THIS?! YOU ARE FALLING OUT OF A PLANE (yes, I believe people generally call it jumping out of a plane, but really you are just falling).

I see guys on dating apps with skydiving photos and am like "Uhhhh...we are probably not compatible."

I wish I could say I had a reason for my extreme fear of heights, but I can't pinpoint anything as a child that would've scared me so much. Now, as far as phobias go, heights is relatively common and not that irrational as falling from a great height (see: plane) can lead to severe injury or death. So, it makes sense to have a healthy fear of heights as it will lead one to using caution when encountering situations with heights.

But mine goes a bit beyond the rational. Like, yes, everyone knows that falling from a great height can hurt (or kill) you, and most people will take logical steps to avoid that situation (e.g. not standing right on the edge of a cliff and leaning over--though there are those that do this). But I will do things to avoid heights that are less logical.

I will avoid going on balconies if the railings don't feel high enough (they should be at least chest height on me for me to feel comfy). I make sure I am always at least one full body length away from the edge of a cliff or drop off. I avoid being on ladders or even standing on chairs (get a tall friend, I say).

Now, I will (surprisingly) admit that videos of indoor skydiving don't make me panic, which makes me think that MAYBE I could try that. However, I once had a similar thought process for a carnival ride and ended up gripping my friend and swearing the whole time (and demanding ice cream afterwards as I shook). So, indoor skydiving is also probably a no.

Now, there are lots of other things I think I'd never do, so here are some honorable mentions that came to mind as I wrote this post:

  • Most other things involving heights
  • Work in any kind of security/military job
  • Have a pet tarantula
  • Go deep-sea diving
  • Swim through a cave
  • Run for political office
  • Be a lawyer
  • Travel alone in a country where I don't speak at least some of the language
