Carol knew she should really open her mail faster than she did. She usually let it pile up on her kitchen table until she really couldn't take it anymore. Most of the mail was junk and her recycling filled up quickly when she finally decided to sort through it all. She did online banking an online bill pay so there were never any nasty surprises.
The last time she'd looked through the pile, it was late November. After scraping all of the spam and advertisements, she found that she had an orange envelope from her aunt. She confusedly got her letter opener and slit the envelope open. Out fell a Charlie Brown Halloween card.
Carol smiled, she had always loved Charlie Brown ever since she was little. She opened the card and a read her aunt's note:
Dear Carol,
I saw this card and remembered how much you loved Charlie Brown. You probably don't remember, but I was the one who first showed you Charlie Brown. I know we need to catch up, so I just wanted to drop you a line. Happy Halloween!
Love,
Lisa
Carol smiled, thinking of the first time she'd seen Charlie Brown. She had forgotten it was her aunt who'd shown her. Then, Carol remembered that it was nearly a month since Halloween and she thought of her aunt, excitedly sending out the card and then waiting for a response and never getting one.
Luckily, Carol had a plan. She put the card in her briefcase and hurried off to work. Once she got to her desk, she found a spot with care and leaned the card lightly against her cubicle wall. She snapped a picture on her phone and then she gently tapped the card, causing it to fall down the crack between the cubicle and her desk and onto her floor. Carol crouched down and snapped a picture of it on the floor before putting the card back up on her desk.
She texted the picture to her aunt and said:
Aunt Lisa! I had wanted to take a picture of your lovely card on my desk, but I thought it'd gone missing. Turns out it had just fallen! I'm glad I found it again today. A very belated thanks.
She then texted the first picture to her aunt and added:
Back in its rightful place. Let's chat soon!
Carol smiled to herself, this would make her aunt feel special even though the text was late. Before long, her aunt had texted her back and they had set up a weekend lunch date. Aunt Lisa had always been Carol's favorite aunt, so she was happy to know she'd be spending time with her again soon.
Carol decided to leave the card up, it made her smile after all and sometimes that's just what you need in your gray work cubicle. But then, one day Carol started to feel sick and went home early. As people came by her cubicle looking for her, they bumped her desk and the card fell to the ground.
The next day, Carol was still feeling sick so she stayed home. That day though, was the office's spring cleaning day. Carol thought it was a good one to miss as she knew she wouldn't get more behind in her work and she kept her cubicle pretty clean. Her co-workers, knowing she was out sick, wanted to be sure she still got a cleaner desk out of the day, so they dusted everything and cleaned her screen. One of them went to collect her trash and found the card on the ground. He figured, if it was on the ground, Carol must've meant to throw it out, so he chucked it in the garbage and thought nothing more of it.
Carol came back to work the following day and noticed immediately that Charlie Brown was missing. She hunted all around her desk and the floor for it, but no luck. She sadly snapped a picture of the card's empty spot and sent it to her aunt with the text:
Charlie Brown seems to have run away!
A reply came quickly:
Don't worry, a Charlie Brown Easter card is already in the mail!
