15 minutes of short film brainstorming #1

So me and a friend of mine have a pact to make a short film together so I gotta get brainstorming. So far I have...a title. I like the title and will not change it :P

Alone in the Moonlight

  • About dementia
  • Unclear that main character has dementia in beginning
    • ideas on how to demonstrate
      • have the main character ask repeated questions
      • have post-its all over the place that have phone numbers and other reminders on them
      • have the main character talking about holidays that are out of season based on calendar and/or how outside looks through a window
      • maybe it's one long conversation cut up to look like multiple
      • try to make the movie dream-like
  • Other possible characters in film
    • Child of main character
    • Care taker of main character
      • Main character is unsure why they're there
  • Maybe character realizes they have dementia during it, like they journey with the audience to realize it
  • Maybe the last scene is just like the first scene
  • Possible topics to cover in conversation between main character and other(s)
    • job of other(s)
    • time of year
    • holidays
    • memories of long ago
      • childhood of both main and other characters
      • college time of both main and other characters
      • parent(s) of main character
      • sibling(s) of main character
    • relationship status
    • education status
    • health
    • maybe have the conversation be very vague or muffled
  • Child of main character
    • Concerned
    • Tries to be patient
    • Takes note of inconsitencies around them
    • Tidies out of anxiety
    • a little prim
  • Caretaker
    • Kind
    • Patient
    • Respectful
    • Insistent
    • Tidy
  • Main character
    • has dementia (maybe hint at cause being alcohol?)
    • male (I could easily be swayed female)
    • short term memory very bad
    • has better memory of things long ago
    • still knows who child is (assuming we have this character)
    • still tries to do mental things like read books and do crosswords
    • wears glasses, but loses them
  • Maybe no real plot at all and make it more dream like and vague
    • would require more work on my friend's end, but maybe she's up for it? (Are ya?)
    • maybe POV filmwork
    • series of very short scenes
      • post-it notes
      • caretaker appearing and vanishing
      • child appearing and vanishing
      • seasons seeming to change constantly (or maybe not at all though the calendar has changed)
      • half-read books
      • half-done crosswords
      • clutter (caretaker and child tidy)
      • constantly lost glasses (blurry shots?)
      • half-eaten trays of food
Boy I need to do another one of these because I am not ready to start writing. Or maybe I should just start writing and see what happens. What do you think?

Starting my parental journey, part 2

You can read part 1 here . Yesterday I began the next step of my parental journey. Ironically, it was starting birth control. This medicine helps prepare my ovaries for the egg retrieval process. It was weird taking the pill to prepare for my fertility journey because you typically think of the pill as ensuring you don't get pregnant. Obviously, I'm not getting pregnant now, but I am getting ready for that eventual possibility. There have also been various bureaucratic issues that I've been dealing with. Mostly insurance stuff (as I'm sure comes as no surprise). But, thanks to a new benefit at work that started 1/1/24, my journey will be (mostly) covered. While, again, there were some bureaucratic hurdles that I had to overcome in order for this to all work out, I am immensely glad that it did work out. I am nervous though. In part I'm nervous about a lot of the practicalities of this step in my journey. For instance, I will have to inject myself with various medica...

15 ways to support me on my parental journey

I posted yesterday and in August, 2023 about starting my parental journey. If you're wondering how you can support me, here are some ideas I have at the moment (though these may change and also don't feel pressured to do any of these things). Check in via text or DM so I can respond at my leisure (but please don't be insulted if I take a long time to respond) Help with arranging food for me (I know that when I get overwhelmed, I often have really awful eating habits) Offer to help with apartment chores (I may turn you down, but the offer will mean a lot) Walk Hoban (I realize only some people can do this, but the relief of lightening the responsibility of Hoban will likely be welcome) Be understanding if I have to cancel plans (I hope to still be somewhat social during this time, but I cannot guarantee how I'm going to feel) Drive me to appointments (I have the retrieval itself covered, but I have other appointments that will happen leading up to it so if you have the...
