15 things on my one shot idea: A new family member from an estranged side of the family has shown up at the door, asking for aid

So I wrote a list of 15 one shot ideas, then narrowed it to five, and now I'm narrowing it to three and doing a pageish on each one. Did I miss your favorite? Let me know!

  1. Vibes: Gothic novel mixed with elves
  2. How the party knows each other: They're a closely related family (the Rosewinds) that lives in town together (the town is also named after them [Windsport]). Some can be married into the family.
  3. Opening scene: The Rosewind family sits down to their weekly family dinner. Amidst the talking, a loud knock resounds through the poorly kept Rosewood. At the door is a face the entire Rosewind family recognizes, for an astonishingly similar one hangs in their hallway. The person at the door claims to be Frid Rosewind, from the eastern Rosewinds (whom the western Rosewinds lost touch with centuries ago). Frid shares his sob story of going against his family in a matter of political business and becoming estranged from them. Now finding himself destitute, he decided to seek out the only other family he has: the Rosewinds of Windsport. Does the family invite him in or send him elsewhere?
  4. A note on the town/city/village: The Rosewinds founded Windsport on the Tra Sea on the east side of the island nation of Cuilinn. Originally the Rosewinds made money on a brisk shipping business, but as more competition moved into this lucrative port, their funds have gone down. While they are still wealthy, they are far from the moguls they once were and live in a somewhat rundown mansion on the edge of town called Rosewood. The favorite local tavern in town is called The Blue Whale.
  5. A note on the government: There is a mayor of this town, but the Rosewinds are also seen as an authority in town. The mayor reports to the governor of the state of Enaim, Daniel Cuidachta, who reports to the king of the nation of Cuilinn, Craolachan Mericea.
  6. A note on religion: Curses, demons, witches, etc. are very much believed to be a thing. Magic alone is not enough to be considered to make you fearsome, but it can be a factor. Curses etc. are believed to be unholy and have no place in the religion of the world. The religion is monotheistic, worshipping the goddess Bandia (whose symbol is a bright yellow sun).
  7. A note on magic in the world: Some magic is believed to come from the goddess Bandia, but it is also known that magic some comes from darker places. So magic is viewed with some caution, but it is far from illegal.
  8. Party restrictions (e.g. class, age, species): If born into the Rosewinds, players must be an elf or half-elf as the family is elven. However, if they have married into the family they can be elf or human. Any class (except bloodhunter) is acceptable. While elves are still long-lived, they more live to be 150. Humans live to be about 100.
  9. How different species (or races) are viewed in the world: I imagine this world to just be elves, half-elves, and humans. Elves are the ancient species of this land and humans came from a foreign land about 1,000 years ago and have intermixed. Even though there are no legal barriers for any species, societally, elves typically are richer and more elitist (though some humans believe in their superiority as well).
  10. What item(s) can the party have at the beginning of the adventure: This is somewhat flexible and will depend on what the players have in mind. Given, the family is old money, so it's plausible that they'd have quite a bit. However, with magic being somewhat suspect, magic items are rarer in this world. Also, since the family lives in town, they likely wouldn't have too many adventuring items, but I could be made to believe there are some family heirlooms.
  11. Maximum party size: 5
  12. Who has hired the party: This depends a bit on the choices of the party, but it could be the mayor asking the family to investigate or the family deciding by themselves to investigate.
  13. What (if any) is the reward?: If the mayor hires them, political favors and money. If the family does it, then continued clout.
  14. An NPC the party will encounter: Frid Rosewind, an elven family member from the Rosewind side who 200 years ago went to the west side of Cuilinn. He is middle-aged and walks with a cane. He appears to have Rosewind family heirlooms, at least remarkably similar items to those in a painted portrait that hangs in Rosewood. He is very gallant and formal and seems remarkably out of place and at home at the same time.
  15. The paragraph I wrote in summary: The somewhat strained family is sitting down for the weekly family meal when a knock at the door breaks the silence. On the other side is a man who bears a striking resemblance to members of the family. He claims to be from an estranged side of the family that long ago immigrated to another kingdom. However, he says he has found himself destitute for daring to go against the family on an important political matter and begs for sanctuary. Regardless of what the family decides to do, strange happenings begin in town after this disturbance. Has this member brought a curse with him or is he himself the curse?

Starting my parental journey, part 2

You can read part 1 here . Yesterday I began the next step of my parental journey. Ironically, it was starting birth control. This medicine helps prepare my ovaries for the egg retrieval process. It was weird taking the pill to prepare for my fertility journey because you typically think of the pill as ensuring you don't get pregnant. Obviously, I'm not getting pregnant now, but I am getting ready for that eventual possibility. There have also been various bureaucratic issues that I've been dealing with. Mostly insurance stuff (as I'm sure comes as no surprise). But, thanks to a new benefit at work that started 1/1/24, my journey will be (mostly) covered. While, again, there were some bureaucratic hurdles that I had to overcome in order for this to all work out, I am immensely glad that it did work out. I am nervous though. In part I'm nervous about a lot of the practicalities of this step in my journey. For instance, I will have to inject myself with various medica...

15 ways to support me on my parental journey

I posted yesterday and in August, 2023 about starting my parental journey. If you're wondering how you can support me, here are some ideas I have at the moment (though these may change and also don't feel pressured to do any of these things). Check in via text or DM so I can respond at my leisure (but please don't be insulted if I take a long time to respond) Help with arranging food for me (I know that when I get overwhelmed, I often have really awful eating habits) Offer to help with apartment chores (I may turn you down, but the offer will mean a lot) Walk Hoban (I realize only some people can do this, but the relief of lightening the responsibility of Hoban will likely be welcome) Be understanding if I have to cancel plans (I hope to still be somewhat social during this time, but I cannot guarantee how I'm going to feel) Drive me to appointments (I have the retrieval itself covered, but I have other appointments that will happen leading up to it so if you have the...
