I stole a fair few of these!
- Offer to help your DM with things (like scheduling)
- Take all DM questions seriously
- Avoid metagaming (I know it's difficult)
- Take personality quizzes for your character--it'll help you roleplay
- Figure out how you pay attention best (this might mean taking notes or doodling or putting your phone on airplane mode)
- Try to think about your turn in battle before it gets to you
- Tell your DM what you like in a campaign
- Find ways to remind yourself to roleplay (for me, this was sometimes a phrase or adding in a quirk that can help give you something to fall back on)
- If you have the means, draw out your character (or ask a friend to do it)
- Think about what mementos your character would have of home and what trinkets they'd pick up along the way
- Think about what hobbies your character has
- Look up character questions to ask yourself about your character
- Consider writing diary entries for your character after every session
- Make sure your character has flaws (they don't all have to be huge)
- Keep track as best you can of your inventory, abilities, and actions etc.
