15 "By the Book" questions

Just having some fun!

  1. How have your reading tastes changed over time? I used to be a bit snobbier I think, especially in regards to romance novels (which I now adore). I also don't have the reading stamina that I used to. For instance, I used to read and reread an epic fantasy series with epic page counts, but now I prefer a quick read and/or an audiobook
  2. What’s the last great book you read? A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske
  3. The last book that made you laugh? Under Loch and Key by Lana Ferguson
  4. What book did you feel as if you were supposed to like, and didn’t? Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
  5. You’re organizing a literary dinner party. Which three writers, dead or alive, do you invite? Ursula K. Le Guin, Mary Shelley, and Kimberly Lemming
  6. Who is your favorite fictional hero or heroine? Difficult to say, but probably Alanna of Trebond in The Song of the Lioness series by Tamora Pierce
  7. Your favorite antihero or villain? Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemar (from Neverwhere)
  8. What book have you recommended the most over the years? Neverwhere by (the disappointingly terrible) Neil Gaiman (I don't recommend it anymore)
  9. Which genres do you especially enjoy reading? YA, fantasy, romance, and true crime
  10. What kind of reader were you as a child? It honestly took me a while to take off with reading, and I struggled a bit with spelling as a kid (I still do sometimes haha). I liked a few series like The Magic Treehouse and Cam Jansen. Eventually, I also joined the Harry Potter crowd.
  11. What’s the best book you’ve ever received as a gift? Probably Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind (gifted to me by my brother), since it is the book that turned me on to epic fantasy
  12. Are there any classic novels that you only recently read for the first time? Not sure what "classic" exactly means, but I relatively recently read the graphic novel adaptation of Kindred by Octavia Butler
  13. What’s your favorite book no one else has heard of? Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero
  14. Do you count any books as guilty pleasures? I definitely used to, but I've mostly gotten past this I think
  15. Describe your ideal reading experience (when, where, what, how): Probably early evening while it's raining while on a nook that's in a window (with a fluffy blanket and pillows, of course). I'd like someone else around, but not talking. I'd like a warm mug of hot cocoa, and my dog cuddled up and sleeping beside me. I'd like to be reading a shorter, but engaging romantasy with some high stakes. The book would be physical, but maybe some soft music is playing to add some ambiance

15 facts about my dad

Just been thinking about some lighthearted facts I know about my dad lately. When he was young, he had a goldfish named Lysander He introduced me to Star Trek At Christmas, he would tear up at It's a Wonderful Life He used to send me articles from his Yahoo email account that he thought I'd like We used to play a game called "Nightmare" where he would lie down and we'd jump around (and sometimes on) him He would clip possible recipes for us to try out of newspapers and magazines We bought him a Paddington Bear to take on trips because we feared he'd be lonely and he always took it He had teddy bears for three different holidays We once had such a hilariously difficult time building a gingerbread house that when some frosting ended up on the counter, I plopped a gumdrop on it and we laughed until we cried He and his sister were born about 11 months apart We would try recipes from Top Chef He kept gifts I made him, even when they weren't great At Christmas, ...

Tell yourself you can panic later (you'll likely never find the time to, but it'll help) Wear a mask because he's immunocompromised (and besides, you've been out trying to live a life which means you could've caught something) Turn on the Olympics because he can't use a remote anymore and no one has helped him (besides, it's always on these days and he at least used to enjoy it) Practice your sanitized answers to his questions (he won't remember them, but no need to alarm him about in his life, your life, or the world for even a moment) Try not to be in the way of the nurses (you'll fail) Sit on the bed because there is no where else to (and realize your arm is resting against his urine jug) Worry that his bed should be alarmed when he gets up to go to the bathroom (he make...
