Here are some short pieces based on things that have happened in my life recently.
How could I have forgotten how lovely it is to write letters?
These missives from loved ones across the country and even globe have been sitting in a pile (that has moved from one piece of furniture to another) for weeks on end. I think one pretty card I had received close to the new year.
We've just entered the second third of the year and I am finally responding.
I hope my loved ones know that my significant delay has nothing to do with my affection for them. Instead, it has to do with my brain grasping for motivation and coming up empty.
Overdue
I am so behind on so many things. This week I managed to catch up on chores and one review I had due.
But there is so much more I'm behind on.
Finding a condo.
Clearing out my dad's storage unit.
Framing art.
Cleaning my bath tub
Making my bed.
Getting a hair cut.
Scrubbing my stove top.
Throwing away dead plants and leaves.
Writing up an interview with bookstore owners.
Reading a picture book and a graphic novel and crafting a review of each.
Giving away things I no longer need.
Painting rocks.
Neatening my closets.
Washing dishes.
Setting up my robot vacuum.
And those are just the ones that cycle through my head constantly.
How does anyone find the motivation? Not trying is so much easier. So much comfier. So much cozier.
Survivor
I've been watching the 50th (yes, 50th) season of Survivor with some friends. It's been pretty fun to have that weekly tradition and to watch this wild show with friends.
The latest episode was called "Side Dish of Chaos," but I think a more accurate name would've been "Entree of Chaos" (although, since the tradition is to select a quote from the episode to use as the title, I would've pulled the quote "Jeff is Ready to Cook Us").
Due to a new kind of advantage (called the "MrBeast Super Beware Advantage," which I would've just called the "Beast Beware Advantage") as well as a player adopting chaos as his primary strategy, chaos reigned during this latest episode.
My favorite player, Cirie, managed to get a player voted out who came first for one of her closest allies and then for her (both of which are wild choices, especially given that Cirie had proved that she could tell when this other player was lying).
I hope Cirie wins this season or that she at least unleashes a ton of chaos when they send her to the jury.
True Crime
I have been watching and listening to a lot of true crime lately.
I'm not sure why.
I think because the ones I'm choosing go over cases where the bad guys are unmasked and the innocent go free (even if after a horrific amount of time).
Sometimes I need reminders that those who do evil deeds are seen for what they are--even if they should've been seen much earlier.
I also need to be reminded that there are avenues for people to find justice even if it is far too late.
It still means something, in the end, for truly heinous to be remembered as such and for the truly innocent--if imperfect--to have their names cleared.
