Snippets, forty-one

Here are some short pieces based on things that have happened in my life recently.

Bubble Wrap

Seriously, if you are reading this, please package yourself in bubble wrap.

For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, in less than a month I've had 7 loved ones have a medical procedure and/or scare. Yes, these medical issues varied from planned to put off to emergency and yes, 6 of those 7 are home now, but I need everyone to be more careful.

No more, okay?

I think I have earned a reprieve of loved ones falling ill or injuring themselves until at least 2027.

Yes, I know that's not actually how the world works and yes, I do not not actually believe in curses or such things, but my nervous system cannot take this.

I do want to acknowledge that all of these medical issues have had great affects on others' lives, health, and nerves, but I cannot read their minds--I can only read mine. Also, it would not be my business to share their thoughts, feelings, and/or medical issues here as that is all their own story to tell.

So, I will go back to talking about my story.

Here are things I recommend for my loved ones to help repair my nerves:

  1. Bubble wrapping yourself (failing that, wear seatbelts, helmets, and any other even recommended safety gear)
  2. Exercising the MOST caution when operating any vehicles or heavy machinery
  3. Communicating with me the full scope of things (as you understand them) as downplaying them meant when things got worse I was shocked as I didn't know anything was wrong in the first place
  4. Giving me emergency contacts--never again will I be caught without one (I am not exaggerating)
  5. Responding when I ask for an ETA or just proof of life
Yes, that last one may be a bit more extreme, but my nerves are frayed. Please help repair them when you are up for it.

Pirates

Tomorrow I'm going to a pirate themed party where we plan to watch the 1996 classic Muppet Treasure Island. It has been forever since I've watched this movie and I'm looking forward to seeing friends in a light-hearted setting.

Now, on another note, one thing you should know about my mother is that she loathes the romanticization of pirates (also the mafia, but that's a story for another time). But, surely Tim Curry and the Muppets are an exception? Afterall, Muppet Treasure Island is, in part, so much fun because Tim Curry acts as though he is a fellow Muppet.

When I mentioned this party to my mom, I failed to mention the film screening, but perhaps that will redeem it in her eyes.

As for my outfit, I will be reusing my Renaissance Faire top as it's pirate-ish (I also used it for a loosely Viking-inspired outfit) and combining it with a scarf and one more pirate-y surprise (there will probably be pics tomorrow, so stay tuned).

Besides the movie, I don't know what other activities this pirate party has in store--perhaps a treasure hunt? Maybe we must all talk like pirates or walk the plank? Try to accomplish tasks with an eye patch and/or hook for a hand?

Hopefully, no one will get scurvy.

Shred

I've decided it's time to sort things out to shred.

Yes, I do need to buy a shredder--but I've picked one out, I swear!

Now I just have to go through all of my dad's documents and decide if there is anything I need to or should keep.

Some things are easy like any proof of his Canadian citizenship--want to wait until my brother and I have our Canadian passports in hand before I ditch those. He also had a copy of my social security card so that's nice to have as well (my mom theoretically also has a copy, but it seems to have run away from the drawer it used to be kept in).

Some things are easy to ditch like old job ID badges for jobs I don't even remember him having. He also had a lot of recipes saved, but I didn't like a lot of them, so those I can just toss.

But what about his student IDs? Yeah, I don't need them, but they mostly show him smiling--a sight that's hard to remember these days. I also have itineraries for his various trips, but those are often a reminder of how often he gallivanted about the world while my brother and I were at home with our mom or of how he promised to take me fishing, but never did.

Maybe shredding things will bring some form of catharsis, but, to be honest, it's difficult to fight my automatic response to just shut down.

Maybe I can shred that as well.

15 facts I learned from a random Wikipedia article

Original prompt: click on "Random Wikipedia Article" and write about whatever comes up (you can try 3 times and pick your favorite). For the record, I got Alejandro Estivill , Fencing at the 2011 Pan American Games – Women's épée , and Benjamin F. Jonas . I chose Benjamin F. Jonas because it was the longest of the three entries and it had a photo. He was born in Kentucky, moved to Illinois as a kid, and went to college and spent the rest of his life in Louisiana Jonas's father was a merchant and lawyer His father knew Lincoln (like they were real buds) Despite this, Jonas sided with the confederacy Not only did he side with the confederacy, but he joined the Confederate army and rose to the rank of major He went to University of Louisiana (now Tulane) Jonas was Jewish (I didn't know there were Jewish senators who served the Confederacy) He was the second Jewish U.S. Senator from Louisiana and the third Jewish Senator overall Jonas was the first Ashkenazi Jewish US...

Origin story or first issue of a superhero whose super power is geometry

Arya sat in history class and was bored. She longed to get to geometry, where things made more sense. She liked geometry so much that she had joined the math team to be able to do it more. Okay, there was also the extra time with her friends who loved math as much as she did, but some of the appeal was just the math itself. Finally the bell rang and Arya had four minutes to get to her geometry class. She passed right by the chemistry class next door where her least favorite teacher was conducting experiments. He needed to be more careful, thought Arya. The teacher had once exploded a glass beaker and not on purpose. Arya took her seat and excitedly pulled out her notebook. It was her favorite color: hot pink. She assigned her notebook and folder colors in ways that felt right to her. And since geometry was her favorite subject, she made her notebook and folder for it her favorite color. As the teacher started to go over the most common mistakes from the last quiz, Arya could've swo...

Color palette

Original prompt: "Google "color palette," pick one, and write something inspired by it." I actually Googled "color palette public domain" to be sure I could use it and found the image on this post. I used the "floral" section for my inspiraiton. The soft sunlight somehow didn't dim the shine of the fireflies. Such it was in the fae realm. Fern loved this time of day in the faewild where it wasn't quite day, but it was far from night. Fern frolicked alone in the glade as she was want to do. It didn't matter to her that her laughter carried itself alone on the breeze; she was content. She wasn't sure how long she'd been alone as she watched the suns begin to set, but it was pleasant in its own way. But then, she heard a noise. It wasn't the noise of leaves on the wind or twigs snapping from some comforting creature. It was the noise of someone approaching with grim determination. Fern wasn't sure how to ready herself to ...
