Original prompt: What’s something analog or antiquated you’ve been wanting to practice just for the sake of doing it? Book-binding? Knife sharpening? Memorizing a poem?
- Blacksmithery: I mean...if I could make a sword? How cool!
- Bowyery: I mean...I could also learn to make bow...
- Ceramic: When I was a kid, I made ceramics at art camp and I enjoyed it--maybe I could make something less ugly now
- Cloud watching: I wouldn't want to to this alone, but how lovely would it be to lie in warm grass and just talk about shapes with friends?
- Falconry: I truly just think this is badass
- Letterlocking: Truth be told, I have seen photos of locked letters and cannot understand how they are done--perhaps I could learn!
- Long exposure pinhole photography: I remember doing this back in high school and it was pretty cool!
- Morse code: Always fun to be able to communicate without speaking
- Pealing: It'd be badass and beautiful to to play a series of church bells and make a joyous song
- Performing epic poetry: Have you ever heard Beowulf sung in its original old English? It's quite powerful
- Pressing plants: At various times in my life, I have pressed flowers or leaves. It could be lovely to do so again and then make art out of it.
- Pyrography: Art burned into wood has always look so cool to me and I also enjoy the smell of wood burning.
- Seal-making: Closing letters with a wax seal is just a whole other level of epic
- Time capsule making: I believe I did this once as a kid, but truly not sure. What if I got some friends to make a time capsule and we open it in 5 or 10 or even 25 years?
- Woodturning: I first looked up if there was a specific verb for making nutcrackers, but there isn't one. However, the internet told me that woodturning is using a wood lathe and hand-held tools to cut rotation-symmetrical shapes in wood--this is the process used to make nutcrackers! There is just something I find so charming, warm, and festive about them that I think it'd be lovely to make them and give them as gifts
