I recently purchased The Ultimate RPG Game Master's Worldbuilding Guide: Prompts and Activities to Create and Customize Your Own Game World by James D'Amato and it, and going whale watching, inspired me to create a new D&D world. So here we go! I'm going to use prompts from the book to begin crafting this world, but not all posts will be from there.
You can read part 1 of my planning here, read part 2 of my planning here, read part 3 of my planning here, read part 4 of my planning here, read part 5 of my planning here, read part 6 of my planning here, read part 7 of my planning here, read part 8 of my planning here, read part 9 of my planning here, read part 10 of my planning here, read part 11 of my planning here, read part 12 of my planning here, and read part 13 of my planning here.
In this post, I will brainstorm the political structure.
- Perhaps a bicameral legislature for the united laws
- One official from an old family of each island (like combining the Senate and the House of Lords)
- Maybe they're thought to be descended from the island's patron god
- Eldest child to eldest child inherits the title
- If there is a dispute over whom should inherit a seat, the temple steps in to mediate
- Lower house
- Laws start here and move to the upper house if they receive a simple majority (ties fail)
- Members of the upper and lower houses form the council of each island which enacts local laws by simple majority
- A certain number of elected officials based on population with at least one per island (like combining the House of Representatives and the House of Commons)
- All of those aged 25 and up can vote
- Anyone age 25 and up can run (however, you cannot hold a seat in both houses)
- Upper house
- Laws start in the lower house and move here if approved
- Laws go into effect if they receive a 2/3 majority
- Members of the upper and lower houses form the council of each island which enacts local laws by simple majority
- Monarchal figurehead?
- Perhaps those in the old families can serve as this on their respective islands
