Promises

After breaking yet another promise to my brother, a fairy appeared before me. She was beautiful and ethereal, having a comforting aura about her. For some reason, I thought I would be rewarded by her presence, but instead I was cursed. "Hear me, Charlotte of Champaign, you can no longer break a promise." At first, I was pleased, I thought this meant that I would be granted the power to fulfill every promise I made. The curse did not seem so bad. "If you cannot fulfill the promise, you will not be able to make it," the fairy continued. This seemed odd, I thought. I thought every promise I had made had been one I could have fulfilled. Sure, I had not fulfilled them, but that was not because I was incapable...was it? Before I was able to ask anything of the fairy, she vanished as quickly as she had appeared. I blinked and the memory of the fairy began to fade. Perhaps I dreamed the whole thing I thought to myself and carried on about my day. I met up with a f...

Cozy mystery brainstorm #2

So time is an illusion so I decided to just do one of my old prompts again rather than think of a new one. So here's another brainstorm session for a different cozy mystery! Main character : Late 30s, artist, female, has a female best friend that she has a crush on, enjoys her job, but wishes she had more time to do her own artwork, Setting/character's job : Instructor at one of those paint and sip nights or whatever you call the events where you drink wine and paint together Some big event related to the person's job where the climax of the story will happen : Largest paint and sip night that is also a fundraiser for the local animal hospital Sidekick (ideally animal) : Pet chinchilla who is often the subject of the paintings at the paint and sip nights. It is the chinchilla running around the shop that leads the main character to discover the body and helps give the main character a hint at whodunnit because while the chinchilla is normally very easy going with every...

Cozy mystery brainstorm #1

So writing cozy mysteries would be oh so much fun. So here are some elements I need to brainstorm. Main character : Early 30s, female, single (gonna be romance somewhere in the series), book lover, nerd, kind, loves her job Setting/character's job : Local bookstore with focus on sci-fi, fantasy, and graphica Some big event related to the person's job where the climax of the story will happen : ComicCon-like convention where the local bookstore will have a booth Sidekick (ideally animal) : Pet tegu, because tegus are amazing and it breaks the typical cat or dog choice, will help catch person by maybe tripping them or maybe clawing at their legs or just scaring them by being in a weird place Who got murdered : A male comic book writer and artist with the hottest new publication after a series of incredibly mediocre ones How murdered : Stabbed with a realistic recreation of a weapon from the book Suspect known to the main character : Rival female writer and artist whose co...

Puppy

Okay so I should probably clarify a few things first. Puppy is not a puppy. He is, in fact, over four years old, but a) he looks like a puppy and b) I tend to call all dogs puppies. Puppy is not my dog, he belongs to my dear friends Emily and Joe. Puppy is not Puppy's name. His real name is Buehrle after the baseball player Mark Buehrle who was, at least at one point, on the White Sox (Emily and Joe are quite the baseball fans and their favorite team is the White Sox). Despite all of this, I call him Puppy and he is the closest thing I have to having my own pet. Now Puppy didn't always like me. He was quite alarmed by my presence, but I grew on him. After he moved to Chicago, Emily helped me trick him into sitting in my lap by putting one of his favorite blankets across my lap and coaxing him into sitting in my lap. We have escalated to the point that he knows my name. I find it so exciting that Emily can say my name and he gets so excited. When he stopped barking when...

Interview

This is how I decided to interpret the prompt. I wrote up 30 questions that I thought could be fun to ask as well as answer. Please feel free to answer these! I guess I based them on the five sense a bit, but not sure how that happened! Please also feel free to skip those you don't want to answer! What songs make you think of someone? Why? Are there any songs that make you think of a time in your life? Did you ever play an instrument? Can you still play any songs on it? Do you remember any lullabies that were sung to you? Do you have a favorite? Are there any songs you learned at school that you still know? What is a food you loved as a kid that you hate now? What is a food you hated as a kid that you will actually eat now? Have you ever eaten a dish you didn't like to be nice? What was it and why did you eat it? What's the first dish you learned how to make? Do you remember who taught you? What's your favorite dish that you can make? What's your favor...

Dear 80 year old me,

Dear 80 year old me, How's it going? Sorry that's probably a weird way to start a letter, but I wasn't sure how to start the letter and it seems like you're supposed to ask how people are doing. Although, I'm not sure you are able to respond, so maybe that doesn't matter. I hope you're doing well. I know you've had some rough patches because I've had rough patches, but you've probably had even more since you're 54 years older than me. I'm glad you got through them all though. I guess we're stronger than we think. I hope you have some grandkids by now. I'm not personally ready to have kids at 26, but I do plan to have kids one day. If I managed to make a lot of money, maybe you have four kids, but I hope you have at least two like you want. Then I hope you have grandkids, but this year I've seen our mom become a grandma and it just looks delightful. If you don't have grandkids, maybe you have some grandnieces or nephe...

24 hours

Welp if I only had 24 hours left to live, I think I would probably start with the practical stuff. Get my loan paid off as much as I could and figure out a way to cover the rest. I'd also be sure my tax stuff could be found because my 2018 taxes will still need to get filed (I think). I guess I'd also have to write up a will, which would probably just leave everything to my brother (including making him my literary executor cause who knows? people publish posthumously all the time) but I still gotta get that sorted. I guess I would also figure out some stuff about how I'd want my memorial service to go. I want to be cremated, but only after any and all organs that can be donated are donated (this is probably already a given since I'm signed up to be a donor, but still). I really like the idea of my ashes being mixed with the soil to plant a tree because then there's still the element of a memorial and a place where people could come "visit" me if they wa...
