15 ways to support the trans* community

These are just ones I found, please feel free to edit and/or add to this list. I did a similiar earlier post called "15 ways to support trans youth in Texas."

  1. Stay informed of worrying legislation. One easy way to do this is to look at the ACLU page "Mapping Attacks on LGBTQ Rights in U.S. State Legislatures". Another way to do this is to sign up for emails from the National Center for Transgender Equality to find out when worrying legislation is coming up in your state
  2. Learn about current laws in your state. One easy way to do this is to look at the Map Advancement Project. Here is Illinois's map. Another way is to look at your state bar's website. Here is the Illinois State Bar Association's page on LGBT rights.
  3. If you find out that your state is considering anti-trans* legislation, get in touch with your state government. You can find your local state government information here. You can get in touch with your governor here
  4. Even if your state isn't considering worrying legislations, get in touch with your state government to encourage them to enshrine trans* rights. You can find your local state government information hereYou can get in touch with your governor here
  5. Check out the National Center for Transgender Equality action center
  6. Read up on glaad's ally guide
  7. Read the ACLU's quick guide to being an ally
  8. Spread the word about glaad's transgender resource page and donate if you can
  9. Spread the word about the Transgender Law Center and donate if you can
  10. Spread the word about the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund's Trans Health Project and donate if you can
  11. Spread the word about the Trans Lifeline (in the US at 1-877-565-8860 and in Canada at 1-877-330-6366) and donate if you can
  12. Spread the word about the Trevor Project (call 1-866-488-7386, text ‘START’ to 678-678 to connect via text, or chat online with a Trevor Project counselor here) and donate if you can
  13. Spread the word about the LGBT National Hotline (1-888-843-4564) and donate if you can. Note that they also provide a LGBT Senior Hotline at 1-888-234-7243 and LGBTQ Youth can call 1-800-246-7743 or join youth chat rooms here
  14. Spread the word about TransFamilies and donate if you can. Note that TransFamilies offers support groups
  15. Spread the word about FORGE and donate if you can

Starting my parental journey, part 1

To be clear, I am not pregnant. Nor do I currently plan on being pregnant soon. However, I promised myself that if I was 30 and still single I'd start to explore my options for having a child either on my own or later in life with a partner. Well, 30 came and went, but 31 is still here so close enough I figure. My first step was to make an appointment to discuss options with a doctor because I could do all the research I wanted on the internet, but I knew it would overwhelm me. As I write this, I haven't had that appointment yet so no news there. Now I made this appointment in February (hey, I was still 30 then!) and it was originally scheduled for October (yes, an 8-month wait for an initial appointment), but last week the appointment got moved up to this week and things got moving! The timing feels right in a certain way. Two people I care about are having babies in the next month, someone else I love is expecting next year, and I also know multiple couples either trying or g

Starting my parental journey, part 2

You can read part 1 here . Yesterday I began the next step of my parental journey. Ironically, it was starting birth control. This medicine helps prepare my ovaries for the egg retrieval process. It was weird taking the pill to prepare for my fertility journey because you typically think of the pill as ensuring you don't get pregnant. Obviously, I'm not getting pregnant now, but I am getting ready for that eventual possibility. There have also been various bureaucratic issues that I've been dealing with. Mostly insurance stuff (as I'm sure comes as no surprise). But, thanks to a new benefit at work that started 1/1/24, my journey will be (mostly) covered. While, again, there were some bureaucratic hurdles that I had to overcome in order for this to all work out, I am immensely glad that it did work out. I am nervous though. In part I'm nervous about a lot of the practicalities of this step in my journey. For instance, I will have to inject myself with various medica
