15 minutes of a Sterek fanfic, part 11

You can read part 1 here, part 2 here, part 3 here, part 4 here, part 5 (NSFW) here, part 6 here, part 7 here, part 8 here, part 9 here, and part 10 here.

Everyone accepted the coffee and settled in for a long wait. Isaac kept sitting in the spot to hide the dent; Erica and Boyd sat next to Isaac, holding hands; Lydia sat next to them, occasionally chatting with Allison on her other side; Scott was holding both his mom and Allison's hands; and the Sheriff sat next to Derek, not saying anything, but Derek found it a comfort nonetheless.

Derek kept focusing on Stiles's heartbeat. He gradually realized that its pace was changing. Stiles was waking up.

Derek didn't watch how much time had passed, but at some point a nurse appeared and called out, "Stilinski family?"

Derek snapped to attention, as did the rest of the group, as the sheriff went up to talk to the nurse.

"He's awake and ready to see you," said the nurse quietly. "I know you're the sheriff, but the deputies will want to talk to him before," she glanced in Derek's direction, "anyone else sees him."

The sheriff ran his fingers through his thinning hair, "I hear ya. I'll accompany the deputies in."

The nurse looked a bit hesitant, but nodded. The sheriff waved over some deputies that Derek hadn't even noticed were lurking in the waiting area. The sheriff briefly looked back over at the group and gave a little wave before following the nurse behind the doors.

"What's going on?" asked Allison.

"Clearly the police get to talk to Stiles first," said Lydia primly. "But if they're bringing the cops in, then he must be lucid enough to make a statement."

Lydia had a point, Stiles had to be doing well if they were willing to let him be interrogated. "He's awake," said Derek, "we'll deal with the rest later." He wasn't sure if he was saying that more to the pack or to himself.

"Derek," said Erica quietly, "don't listen in."

Derek blinked at her, "What?"

"You don't need to relive it now. Let Stiles tell you when he wants to."

Derek buried his head in his hands. She was right. Of course she was right, but he so wanted to hear Stiles's voice. Soon, he told himself, soon.

After what felt like hours, but was likely more like thirty minutes based on the amount of traffic that had come through the waiting room, the deputies reemerged with a nurse who called out, "Derek Hale?"

Derek was at her side preternaturally quick.

The nurse was a bit taken aback, but still spoke. "The sheriff said to get you."

Derek could've hugged the nurse in relief, but thought better of it. He turned and gave a small wave and even smile to the pack before following her down the corridor.

She stopped at a room and said, "He said to wait until he came out."

Derek nodded and took to leaning on the wall by the door. Even without his wolf senses, he could hear the conversation inside.

"All this for a--for a temporary thing?" asked the sheriff.

"It's not a temporary thing, dad." Stiles's voice. Derek's heart rose in his chest even though he was sure they were talking about him.

"So it's like that, huh?"

"Yeah."

"You sure he feels the same?"

"Yeah, dad, I am." Stiles sounded so sure that Derek wanted to burst in and confirm it, but he restrained himself. Revealing that he had been eavesdropping wouldn't get him into the sheriff's good graces...or potentially Stiles's.

"Okay, well I had the nurse go get him so he should be coming in just as soon as I head out."

A pause.

"You want me to head out, don't you?"

"I love you, dad."

"I love you too, Stiles."

And then the door opened.

Starting my parental journey, part 2

You can read part 1 here . Yesterday I began the next step of my parental journey. Ironically, it was starting birth control. This medicine helps prepare my ovaries for the egg retrieval process. It was weird taking the pill to prepare for my fertility journey because you typically think of the pill as ensuring you don't get pregnant. Obviously, I'm not getting pregnant now, but I am getting ready for that eventual possibility. There have also been various bureaucratic issues that I've been dealing with. Mostly insurance stuff (as I'm sure comes as no surprise). But, thanks to a new benefit at work that started 1/1/24, my journey will be (mostly) covered. While, again, there were some bureaucratic hurdles that I had to overcome in order for this to all work out, I am immensely glad that it did work out. I am nervous though. In part I'm nervous about a lot of the practicalities of this step in my journey. For instance, I will have to inject myself with various medica...

15 ways to support me on my parental journey

I posted yesterday and in August, 2023 about starting my parental journey. If you're wondering how you can support me, here are some ideas I have at the moment (though these may change and also don't feel pressured to do any of these things). Check in via text or DM so I can respond at my leisure (but please don't be insulted if I take a long time to respond) Help with arranging food for me (I know that when I get overwhelmed, I often have really awful eating habits) Offer to help with apartment chores (I may turn you down, but the offer will mean a lot) Walk Hoban (I realize only some people can do this, but the relief of lightening the responsibility of Hoban will likely be welcome) Be understanding if I have to cancel plans (I hope to still be somewhat social during this time, but I cannot guarantee how I'm going to feel) Drive me to appointments (I have the retrieval itself covered, but I have other appointments that will happen leading up to it so if you have the...
